| What is freesat ? | |||||
| Here I hope to clear up some of the confusion regarding the freesat service . freesat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV channels to enhance the UK freeview terrestrial transmissions, add " high definition" capabilities and give SKY some competition. All the channels are FREE to view and require no viewing card. All the channels are broadcast form the same orbital location as Sky ( Astra-Eurobird ) Some channels i.e Sky News are not part of freesat but can be accessed through the "Non freesat menu |

| Q What receiver do I need ?

You will receive all the channels on a Sky receiver without a subscription although they will not be in a "user friendly" order. eg large gaps between free and scrambled channel positions that require a card . you do benefit from the interactive services and 7 day Tv guide | ||||

| Various manufactures have been contracted to produce dedicated freesat receivers ,both standard definition (SD)
and high definition HD and receive all the freesat
channels there is a "red" button for the interactive services ( like
SKY ) and a 7 day program guide but channels like "Sky news" do not
feature in the electronic program guide and need to added by the user, (
see links below) currently only BBC,ITV and Luxe TV broadcast a HD
service on freesat CH4 will follow in April High definition ( HD ) receivers and twin tuner models with hard disc are available so you can watch one program whilst recording another, or even record 2 different programs whilst watching a program you have already recorded , A 7 day planner allows "pre programming " of a weeks viewing as well as "series linking". Most receivers can "upscale " std definition pictures to HD resolution so they will look better than the normal pictures on a HD ready TV. Most HD freesat receivers now offer reception of iplayer via a connection to the internet, unfortunately , using a standard French internet connection with a French ip address this service is not available .
